Are ePorfolios Just Another Official Transcript?

Presenter: Thomas Black, Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs and University Registrar, Stanford University

Short Description: Returning to the discussion at institutions of higher education is the subject of ePortfolios, co-curricular transcripts or documentation of extra-academic activities and work. During this session, the audience will discuss with the session leader what is really at the heart of this movement and how institutions might deal with it.

Long Description: Outcomes-based education is encroaching on the traditional academic enterprise, but it is also giving rise to the call for greater transparency and accountability in all activities within the institution. Service learning and other similar learning experiences are being viewed as valuable and necessary part of the educational experience, so valuable, in fact, that institutions are being called upon to document, nay certify the experiences. What might that look like, and how can it be done with today’s technology? Session participants will discuss this subject and examine one prototype to help foster creativity and brainstorming about this old but nettlesome topic.
