3. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: FIPSE-LaGuardia ePortfolio Mini-Grant Program; DEADLINE: November 20, 2008

http://www.laguardia.edu/ctl/mc/cohort2.htm

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

I'm pleased to announce Year 2 of MAKING CONNECTIONS: AN EPORTFOLIO MINI-GRANT AND SEMINAR PROGRAM.  This FIPSE-funded project is designed to help colleges in the NYC metropolitan area move forward with the use of ePortfolio to enhance learning and support new approaches to assessment, accreditation, and transfer.  The attached RFP describes the program and what it can offer to participating colleges.  The deadline for application is November 20, 2008.

Making Connections builds upon the growing interest in ePortfolio in higher education across the country and around the world.  LaGuardia Community College (CUNY), a recognized leader in the field, will convene a year-long seminar program for participating schools, creating opportunities for dialogue and shared learning.  A year-long seminar will begin in February 2009 and include monthly meetings and a summer institute.  Participating colleges will receive a $5,000 mini-grant plus stipends for participating faculty and staff.

Each year of Making Connections prioritizes a thematic/disciplinary focus.  Our first cohort began meeting in January 2008, focusing on ePortfolio in Teacher Education programs and General Education.  For our second cohort, we welcome applications from colleges who want to focus on ePortfolio in programs in Fine Arts, and Allied Health & Sciences, and we will continue to welcome applications focused on General Education.  The application materials (and the website http://www.lagcc.cuny.edu/ctl/mc/cohort2.htm) provide additional details.

We invite you to consider applying to this program.  The application process for our first cohort was competitive, and participating colleges have been highly enthusiastic about the value of the program.  Please feel free to forward this announcement to the person or team you feel would be most appropriate at your institution, and to colleagues who you feel would be interested at other institutions as well.

If you have questions or wish to have our guidance in preparing an application, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Making Connections coordinator, Susan Lambert, is the primary point person and is reachable at slambert@lagcc.cuny.edu or by phone at (718) 482-5419.  You are also welcome to contact me or our faculty leaders, Prof. Max Rodriguez (rodriguez@lagcc.cuny.edu) and Prof. Clarence Chan (cchan@lagcc.cuny.edu).

We look forward to hearing from you and working together towards our shared goals.

Best regards,

Contact: Nicole Buzzetto-More, nabuzzetto-more@umes.edu

Proposals due January 2nd 2009

Electronic portfolios offer a scalable and comprehensive means to document individual and organizational growth and progress, showcase/market talent and achievements, provide a method of assessment and evaluation, expand professional development, examine the efficacy of operations and programs, manage projects, and engage in student and/or labor management.  The intended users vary among portfolio systems which may be geared towards government agencies, nonprofits, business and industry, K-12 education, vocational/professional development training, individual usage, teacher education programs, and/or general higher education use. Further, within individual institutions the platform may be built to accommodate the needs of students, employees, faculty, external stakeholders and auditors, and or management. When thoughtfully implemented the benefits are numerous, serving a number of purposes and benefiting multiple stakeholders.

To date, a well rounded discussion of electronic portfolios as they apply to multiple endeavors is missing from the literature. This forthcoming book will discuss the implications of electronic portfolios in education, labor, and organizational development; best practices and real world examples; system options and considerations; offer models for implementation; and management, and address sustainability issues.

Speakers:

Darren Cambridge, George Mason University; international authority on ePortfolios

Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group Vice-President and Director of the Flashlight Program on the Evaluation and Improvement of Educational Uses of Technology at TLT.

This workshop will deal with three major issues:

a) What activities are participants already invested in that eportfolios might support?

b) How have other campuses and programs been using eportfolios to support these activities, and how successful have they been?

c) How can we measure the learning that eportfolios capture in a way that helps us make connections across disciplines and institutions?

ePortfolios #2 is designed to be of use to those who also participated in the April 2008 workshop. While still appropriate for beginners, there will be little overlap of content.

This workshop will help participants identify educational activities on their campuses that eportfolios can support and to locate models and research findings on the use of eportfolios to support those.

Discounts available to TLT Group subscribers and Individual Members.

Check your institution's current subscriber status: http://www.tltgroup.org/subscription/currentsubs.htm
