  • NERCOMP/CTDLC ePortfolio Webinar, titled: "Educating the Whole Student: What's Our Evidence?", Friday, April 3, 2009, 9:30-11:30 ET.

Cost: $25 for NERCOMP Members and CT Distance Learning Consortium Members. Keynote speakers: Darren Cambridge and Kim Eby of George Mason University. Event Topic and Focus:  ePortfolios make it possible for students to make connections across a range of experiences, from formal learning to the learning that takes place informally in day-to-day life.  Students are asked to upload ?artifacts? that provide ?evidence? of learning into their ePortfolios. But what do we mean by "evidence," and how does a student's understanding of evidence compare with that of the faculty?  What can we learn by listening to students tell us about their firsthand experiences as ePortfolio creators? In this two hour webinar, you will consider these questions from a range of perspectives.  The keynote presenters, noted ePortfolio authorities, will present the findings of their recent research, including a typology of evidence.   Following the keynote, students who use ePortfolios will have a chance to speak for themselves.  A panel of students will present their ePortfolios and discuss the experience from their perspective.  Faculty who work with these students will be on hand to provide background information on the scope and role that ePortfolios play within their institutions.   • Plan to attend AAC&U’s Network for Academic Renewal meeting in Baltimore, Maryland on February 26-28, 2009. The meeting's theme, General Education, Assessment, and the Learning Students Need, will explore how well general education programs match up with expectations for student accomplishment. Assessing Student Learning in the Core with University‐Wide Review of Student Work Via an Electronic Portfolio (Track 5)

Lamar University initiated an assessment of the impact of the core curriculum on student learning outcomes in the context of a decentralized administrative structure that had evolved to emphasize effective course deployment over thorough assessment. This presentation features a discussion of challenges to core assessment encountered by those who played leadership roles in the process. Key challenges include,1) developing an implementable plan via faculty committee, 2) moving from the planning committee to full implementation: Dean and faculty concerns, 3) implementing consistent measures across courses and recruiting faculty to review student work online, and 4) proposing viable instructional improvements and faculty development.

 

Improving General Education Programs Through an Institutional Portfolio (Track 5)

How will we assess our General Education Program? Like many assessment practitioners, Illinois State University Assessment Office staff found themselves asking this question a few years ago. As a result of early fundamental questions, an institutional artifact portfolio system was developed to provide the most meaningful representation of ISU's General Education program possible. ISU's decision to utilize a portfolio process will be discussed as a means to demonstrate the types of questions to consider when moving forward with any type of general education assessment.

Why: We have heard from many Minnesotans and non-Minnesotans who have successfully applied eFolios for learning, for life, and for institutional purposes. The 2008 eFolio Summit is an all-day event that brings together K-12, Higher Education, and Workforce organizations who use, or who are interested in using, the eFolio system software.

 

This event will showcase the work of eFolio Minnesota, eFolioWorld, and the new xFolio software. We will share successes, lessons learned, tips, and strategies using the latest in Minnesota electronic portfolio technology.
