I was wondering if there are many R-1 institutions using “university-wide” portfolios. Can you point me to any research or to a list of schools/people involved?

You might post a similar message on the portfolio@collab.sakaiproject.org mailing list. If you're not on the list you can join by going to http://collab.sakaiproject.org. There are a number of R1 institutions such as and U Mich, Virginia Tech, and Indiana University that are regulars on that list.
